As the Independence Day holiday approaches I would like to take this opportunity to explain some reminders and safety tips just incase you decide to light off some fireworks. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), more fires are reported on the 4th of July than on any other day and ½ of those are caused by fireworks. Therefore, I believe this is a very important topic to address. Below are a few tips to ensure your safety and the safety of others:

  • When around fireworks always wear safety glasses and do not wear loose clothing.
  • Always have an adult to supervise young children operating fireworks.
  • Follow the instructions printed and read all labels before using/lighting fireworks
  • Limit lighting fireworks to one at a time.
  • Have a safe landing zone for aerial fireworks. Make sure you consider wind direction, and ignitability of all things in the landing zone.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher close by.
  • Do not hold fireworks while trying to ignite them. The proper way to ignite a firework is by laying them down, lighting it and walking away.
  • Do not ignite aerial fireworks where trees, wires, etc. are nearby or close to an opening of a building.
  • Never throw fireworks or point them in the direction of people. Do not carry fireworks in your pockets.
  • Make sure you keep spectators in a safe place away from fireworks.

Independence Day: July 4, 2010

The United States is truly a diverse nation made up of dynamic people. Each year on July 4, Americans celebrate the freedom and independence with barbecues, picnics, and family gatherings. But did you know July 4th is formally meant to commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. So as you are barbecuing, watching fireworks, or just watching the baseball game remember we are all very fortunate to live in a nation of such possibilities and freedoms.
